Trade Policy

I am concerned that free trade agreements, like the one entered into with the USA, can compromise the rights of ordinary Australians. No FTAs should require the Government to change existing laws or introduce new laws.

Australia should not compromise its quarantine to facilitate trade with other countries. We have to maintain our disease free status. We do not need another equine influenza type outbreak. The risk to the apple industry of diseases like fire blight from NZ apples and pests like the spotted-wing fruit fly, Drosophila suzukii from China are just too high to justify allowing apples to be imported from those countries in the name of free trade.

I advocate increased vigilance in our quarantine system and a strong stand against relaxing standards to facilitate trade relations.
